What's in your file?

Did you know that your employer keeps information about you as an employee? Well, they do; and it is in your best interest to review that information regularly.

Per Article 31 of our WFSE contract, the Employer may keep one official "personnel file" for each employee and for Commerce that file is maintained by the HR Department. The first-line supervisor is also allowed to keep a "supervisory file." Additional employee files may include attendance files, payroll files and medical files. An employee may examine his or her own personnel file, supervisory file, attendance file, payroll file, and medical file.

Contact your Supervisor to review the supervisory file and contact the HR Manager to review your personnel file. If you find information in these files that is not accurate or outdated, look to your Contract for further action that you are permitted to take.

Have you looked at your PDF lately?

A PDF is the Position Description Form that describes the work you do. Have you looked at yours recently?

If not, now is a good time to request a copy of your PDF for review and to make sure it accurately reflects the work you do. It is important that the PDF accurately reflect your position because this is what your supervisor will judge you by when reviewing your performance. As well, if a lay off were to happen, HR would use the PDF to determine what positions are eligible for bumping purposes. Having an accurate PDF is important to your success in the workplace. Be proactive and review your PDF today!
